Car with apps
March 03, 2010
One of the highlights at the Deutsche Telekom trade fair stand: a car with integrated apps.

Continental and Deutsche Telekom collaborated to develop integrated applications similar to those you use on your Smartphone for mid-range cars. Car owners can use a display in the central console to access the apps. The main attraction is that the applications respond to voice control. The system reads your emails to you, for example. Drivers can use the applications without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.
One platform, endless possibilities
The solution is based on Google's mobile communications system Android. That means that software developers can program applications for the technology just like they can for other cell phones using Android. The direct connection to information from your car makes entirely new solutions possible. The applications can access information such as distance traveled since you last filled up your tank, mileage and maintenance intervals. With this information, for example, developers could design apps that make it possible to keep track of their company fleet at one glance.
