Medical training via the Internet: E-learning with medical-web.tv
Challenge
The new medical-web.tv portal is to deliver user-friendly, anytime content to doctors via their own PCs. It is important that the courses are recognized by the German Medical Associations. In addition to further training modules on specific topics, EUMECOM will offer exclusive live reports from international medical conferences via its training portal.
Since high-quality service is essential, EUMECOM decided to partner with T-Systems on the portal. This continues a proven partnership, as GSK has long used T-Systems’ services to provide data transfer and communications for over 1300 mobile employees via the Internet. Proven performance and reliability were among the reasons EUMECOM opted for T-Systems as their solution partner and service provider.
Solution
The audio/video services are based on state-of-the-art streaming media technology. Audio and video data is first digitized and then transferred to T-Systems’ audio/video servers. From there, it can be accessed very quickly via any Internet or Intranet access technology, such as T-DSL. The data stream enables seamless transfer of sound and images. Conferences and events, and radio or TV broadcasts are available to all registered users throughout the world - either live or on demand, and with additional text, graphics or chat functionality. Up to 40,000 users can simultaneously access the content stored on the T-Systems servers. T-Systems’ central broadcast management center monitors and manages all streaming media broadcasts round the clock. The content and dial-in ports are protected by means of firewalls.

EUMECOM offers a wide range of information on all aspects of medicine via its www.medical-web.tv portal, including the latest diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies - for example, for asthma or epilepsy - as well as information on the effects and tolerances of medications. All the training modules are supplemented by expert explanations, film clips, and computer animations. Slide presentations and texts are available as downloads. With live streaming, users can even ask questions via e-mail. T-DSL Internet access enables doctors to participate in international conferences from their hospitals, their practices, or even from their own homes - an invaluable, cutting-edge service for doctors, who can quickly and easily view up-to-the-minute medical information. Moreover, the training modules on various topics are easily available whenever required.
EUMECOM no longer has to perform time-consuming maintenance of its online offering, which is now handled by T-Systems’ central broadcast management center. This frees up EUMECOM staff for other tasks, such as contacting presenters, designing new training modules, and communicating directly with doctors.
